EIGHT FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE PRICE OF DIAMONDS BEYOND 4 CS

When it comes to diamonds, it's more than meets the eyes. When looking to buy a diamond, great care must be taken to consider various factors that make the diamond worth its price. The most common being the Four C’s of a diamond- Colour, Cut, Clarity and Carat Weight. However, there are several other details that require attention before making a purchase. At Diamond Story, we understand the joy of buying that very special diamond ring or necklace and we want to make sure you make the right choice.

Here’s an additional list of EIGHT things to consider before buying your diamonds, beyond just 4Cs:

1. Diamond Fluorescence: One of the, if not the most controversial factor is the fluorescence of the diamond. Fluorescence is the way a diamond reacts to UV light. Fluorescence can either enhance or decrease the price of a diamond. According to a long study run by GIA, in very rare cases, fluorescence causes the diamond to appear slightly milky, however, in most cases observers preferred diamond with fluorescence. About 30% of the diamonds exhibit this quality wherein they will reflect a blueish light when exposed to UV light.

2. Diamond Shape: Ever wondered what the difference between the shape of the diamond and the cut of the diamond is? The cut of the diamond refers to the way it reflects light whereas the shape refers to the geometric shape of the diamond. The most common shapes are princess, emerald, marquise and oval. 3. Diamond Symmetry: Diamond symmetry refers to the size, shaping and arrangement of the diamond’s facets*. A brilliantly cut diamond will have 58 facets and culet.  While high symmetry grades can add value to the diamond and significantly increase its price, low symmetry grades can have a negative impact on the appearance on the diamond, which naturally decreases its value in the market.
4. Diamond Polish: The polish of a diamond is determined by its manufacturing process. After being cut and faceted, the diamond is polished to reveal its shine and smooth finish. If not polished properly, the light will not be able to penetrate the diamond, affecting its sparkle and brilliance.
5. Diamond Girdle: Girdle is the part of a diamond which separates the pavilion and the crown. Girdles can range from extremely thick to extremely thin and can influence the reflection of the diamond. A girdle that is too thin can make a diamond prone to chipping, whereas a girdle that is too thick can make a diamond appear smaller than it is.
6. Diamond Culet: The Diamond’s culet (pronounced kyoo-lit) is the pointed, bottom tip of the diamond. The angles of the pavilion meet at the pointed culet and prevent light from escaping the diamond, to maintain its brilliance. It is preferred if a diamond has None to very small culet grade to receive an excellent diamond cut.
7.  Diamond Certification: Knowing the precise characteristics and attributes of your diamond is required for evaluating its price. Diamond certification issued by the gemmological institutions such as GIA includes details pertaining to its colour, weight, clarity, cut, polish and the proportions of the stone. It also ensures the quality of the gem stone. Customers often neglect the certification; however, it is one of the most important detail in buying a diamond. This is why all our diamonds come with a GIA certification. To know more, contact us here.
8. Diamond Pricing: The price of the diamond depends on the 4 C’s and a few additional interesting characteristics as mentioned above. There used to be a time when diamonds were erratically priced due to lack of research and knowledge about the gemstone. Post standardisation by GIA the prices of diamonds has come within reach for everyone. Now you buy yourself a reflective, sparkly stone within your budget. At Diamond Story, we believe that there is a diamond for everyone.
