LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

Do you want more sustainable and eco-friendly jewellery? At Diamond Story, we offer lab grown diamonds that have the same properties and characteristics as mined diamonds, but without the destructive mining practices they entail. Our team uses advanced technologies to replicate the conditions under which diamonds naturally form, making them just as authentic and appealing. We’re confident you’ll be just as impressed by and satisfied with man-made diamonds as naturally sourced ones.

What is a Lab Grown Diamond?

Alab grown diamond is a genuine diamond that has been grown in a lab rather than mined from the ground. These diamonds are grown in a highly controlled environment that replicates the natural conditions in the Earth’s mantle, resulting in a man-made product that is physically, chemically and optically indistinguishable from a diamond that’s formed in the earth.

We often get asked if a lab grown diamond is a real diamond or a simulant. We assure you that our lab grown diamonds are as real as any diamond mined from the earth. The only difference between a synthetic lab grown diamond and a mined diamond is its origin. A lot of people mistake the term synthetic as being 'fake', which is inaccurate.

How is a Lab Grown Diamond Formed?

Natural diamonds are believed to be formed when carbon dioxide buried beneath the Earth’s crust is heated in excess of 1200 degrees Celsius and put under extreme pressure. These carbon crystals solidify and form rough diamonds, which are transported to the surface by volcanic explosions.

The process of growing a lab grown diamond is very similar to how a diamond forms in nature. There are two main ways to produce a lab grown diamond. The first is a process called HPHT (High Pressure High Heat) and the second is CVD (Chemical Vapour Disposition). HPHT diamonds are produced in an environment of extreme heat and pressure conducive to diamond growth.

CVD diamonds often begin life as a HPHT diamond seed, which is placed in a sealed chamber and heated to about 800 degrees Celsius. Carbon rich gases are pumped into the chamber, which ionisesin to plasma using technology similar to microwaves or lasers. The ionisation breaks the molecular bonds in the gases and the pure carbon atoms stick to the diamond seed, which slowly crystallises.

What Are the Benefits of a Lab Grown Diamond?

The major benefit of a lab grown diamond is lower cost, but that doesn’t mean they’re lower quality. Mined diamonds and lab grown diamonds all have the same costs to cutting, polishing, grading and inspection. It’s what happens before this process that makes a big difference to the price. Mined diamonds go through many steps to get from a raw diamond to a cut and polished diamond. Lab grown diamonds don’t need to go through as many steps, so they ultimately cost less.

Lab grown diamonds are also better for the environment in that they are significantly less harmful. It takes less energy to grow a diamond in a lab than it does to dig it out of the ground, and it also causes much less destruction in the process. In addition, lab grown diamonds are 100% conflict-free, meaning buyers can purchase one knowing with 100% certainty that a lab grown stone does not support conflict.
